Here's my opinion on best/worst lists of any given year: I love reading them and I hate writing them. It's been a lot of fun looking at what my colleagues here at TV Squad have had to say about the newly ended year, but it's been a slow walk through hell trying to actually make my own list. I'm not sure why, exactly, I had so many problems with the list. Maybe it's because I'm afraid that some sort of cosmic force is going to hold me accountable for what I say here. Like, I'll die and meet the God of TV and he (or she) is going to be waiting for me with my 2006 best of picks and be angry that I left
Two and a Half Men off the list (note, in this scenario, the God of TV is related to Charlie Sheen).
My dislike of having to write this list is part of the reason why I'm posting it in early January and not in the Christmas-New Years corridor like I wanted to. Every time I sat down to write it I suddenly found something I had to do around the house (like take a nap or eat some cheese). Today, though, I finally forced the words out of my fingers. I'm looking forward to hearing how wrong I am about all of these choices!
My best and worst 2006 after the jump...

Fox is giving
King of the Hill a great lead-in:
The Simpsons. The network announced that Hank and the gang are sliding back to the 8:30 pm timeslot on Sunday nights starting with the season premiere on January 28. The season premiere sounds pretty goofy. It's called "The Peggy Horror Picture Show" where Peggy befriends a woman with whom she can talk about her girl issues, such as not feeling feminine enough. Little does she know, her new friend has some issues of her own.
I often watch
King of the Hill reruns on FX in the evenings as I'm making dinner, but I forgot that it's actually still on. When it resumes next month, it will be season 11 for the animated series.
The move from 7:30 to 8:30 bumps
War at Home to Thursdays with unfunny
'Til Death.
American Dad slides into possible oblivion at 9:30 pm.

Ever since getting a Tivo a little over a year ago, I no longer watch TV shows when they actually air. When I'm not catching up with what's on my recorder, I'm either reading, listening to podcasts, or pounding out a blog post about what I'm watching on television. The big deletion from my Tivo Season Pass this year is House. I still admire the show, but for me the magic is gone. The season opener sat on my Tivo for quite a few days, unwatched. When I finally sat down to view it I realized, about fifteen minutes into it, that I had completely lost interest in it. I didn't even finish the episode, and took it off my Tivo for good. Perhaps my attitude will change in the coming weeks, but who knows? Anyway, some of these shows are winding down their current seasons, some have yet to air. All times are Central because I live in Minnesota.

FOX's animation-heavy Sunday lineup kicks off this Sunday starting with The Simpsons at 8, American Dad at 8:30, Family Guy at 9, and The War at Home at 9:30. That doesn't matter though, because we're not going to talk about those shows right now. Instead, let's dive into the nifty press pack FOX sent out to promote their returning Sunday shows. After the jump you'll see pictures of me enjoying all the cool free stuff. Please be aware that I suffer from a rare skin condition, and I'm only twenty-two inches tall. Okay, let's tear into this kit:

FOX has become the next network to offer some of its shows online, but it's doing it a little bit differently. Rather than streaming the shows on its own site, FOX is offering them on the sites of stations the network owns, with future plans to have the shows eventually offered on affiliate sites, as well. As of right now, sites for stations in
Boston,
Dallas,
New York,
Washington DC,
Orlando,
Birmingham,
Los Angeles,
Greensboro, and
Tampa Bay will stream episodes of
Prison Break,
Stacked,
Bones,
American Dad, and
The Loop. FOX is also offering downloads on it's MySpace and IGN sites, as Anna
mentioned earlier. The network is definitely taking a different approach with this than others are, and it will be interesting to see how it all works out.

Does FOX see something in this show that a lot of other people (including me) don't see? I've seen 5 or 6 episodes, and I don't find it that funny. As I've said before, I'd watch a show based around Roger the Alien with the Paul Lynde voice, but I just don't find the show that entertaining. Certainly not on the level of
The Simpsons or
Family Guy.
But FOX has given the green light for
22 more episodes for the 2007-08 season. In fact, the show will probably get better ratings this fall, as it moves into the time slot right after
The Simpsons.

Chris over at
Ad Jab found this
awesome online game created to promote the arrival of
American
Dad on DVD. The game is essentially set up like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat or games of that nature, except it
pits characters from
American Dad against characters from
Family Guy. So, if you ever wanted to use
Stewie to kick the loving bejeezus out of Stan from
American Dad, this is your chance. There's an arcade
version and a two-player version, so you can waste time and do it with someone you love. That's how this thing called
the "Web" brings us together. I haven't gotten that far in the game, but according to Chris the "big
boss" you fight in the end is actually Ryu from Street Fighter. That's a very "
Family Guy" kind
of gag, I must say.

Buried within
this press release about an episode of a
show no one cares about,
The War At Home, FOX casually mentions that a show at least some people care about,
American Dad, is coming back on April 23. I'm actually looking forward to it; the show's been steadily
improving since it first premiered last year, and it's a funny prelude to my Sunday at 10 viewing choice,
Grey's
Anatomy. Good to see it back.
Oh, and just on a side note: I hope they bring back Patrick Stewart more
often as Stan's boss. Just hearing his voice cracks me up for some reason.

Everyone who watches
American Dad knows that Stan Smith is a shallow guy.
Heck, if it was your first time watching
American Dad, you'd get that in about
five minutes, because it's pounded over you head again and again and again and... You get the point, we ALL get the
point. This is my biggest problem with the show, it's like a skipping record, we just keep seeing the same thing over
and over. The occasions where the needle actually gets back on track are awesome, but the monotony is ridiculous.
Speaking of monotony, on with the show!

Ever
wondered what Klaus the goldfish would look like as a black man? Neither did I, but I had never really been posed that
question before. I think if someone asked me that I would have wondered... Well, whether you've had those sick thoughts
before or not, you got the answer to that question during last night's episode of
American Dad. I have a feeling that
American Dad is hitting it's
stride, which is probably not a good thing. The show is going ok, but it's nothing spectacular, and far, far short of
it's potential. It's always going to be the second banana to
Family Guy. It's
not a bad show by any means, but
American Dad will never be as good as
Family Guy. On with the show!

Although last night wasn't the funniest episode of
American Dad, I am
enjoying it more and more as it strays from the Stan and Steve don't get along, Hayley and Stan don't get along, Fran
and Stan don't get along type of stories that have been the norm so far. It's got potential, but it just always seems
to fall short for me. It's supposed to be a parody of the uber-rightwing republican family lifestyle, but it doesn't
capitalize on it all that much, it seems to almost promote that some of the times. I do like Roger and Klaus on the
show, so since this episode revolved around Roger, it was about has funny as a
barrel basement of
monkeys. On with the show!

Still the weakest of the "Fox Block" in my
opinion, but
American Dad is growing on me. I like the episodes that don't feature Stan quite so prominently,
so tonight's episode was right up my viewing alley. It always seems to be, that I'm more interested in the side-stories
and sub-plots than the main one. I'm not sure if that's because they always leave me wanting more, or they really are
just the funnier stories. Either way, seeing Klaus and Steve emerge from the broken closet and call Hayley
"boss" cracked me the heck up. On with the show!

It's still my least favorite of the animated block on Fox's sunday night lineup (although admittedly I'm not including
King of the Hill because I've only seen like two episodes), but
American Dad is growing on me. I've been critical of it in the past, especially when it plays out the same plots over and over and over again, but when they stray from this formula and branch out, I think it can be a really funny show. I thought tonight's episode was funny, it had a slightly different feel to it, but I think that was at least part of the point. On with the show!

Once again, I was more interested in
American Dad's subplots and stories than the main one. The gun story was still funny, just not as well done as Roger and Steve's. I just loved Roger getting even with Steve, and not just because I'm a lover of practical jokes and
pranks, or petty revenge... Well ok, those are exactly the reasons, but it was still funny as crap in my opinion. I just get tired of seeing the ways that Stan and Haley disagree, it seems like a record skipping to me. On with the show!
